Iris Murdoch

The Iris Murdoch Building at University of Stirling houses the "Dementia Studies Centre" - a resource and training centre for the whole of the UK and it was officially opened in 2003 by Dame Judy Dench.

We worked with the Architect and client to develop a unique signage solution that would address many of the issues pertinent to dementia sufferers. For example, "multiple cueing" was used with shape, colour, pictures and text all playing a part in helping someone with short term and selective memory problems to find their way.

The challenge was not only to meet the requirements of this narrow audience but achieve this in a way that lived up to the high aesthetic values of the building design, where great care had been taken by the Architect with regard to it's place in the landscape and to empathise with it's use.
